“A Dream Come True” for Former Virden Oil Cap

Whitecloud heads to Vegas

Former Virden Oil Capitals defenceman Zach Whitecloud is one step closer to achieving his dream of playing in the National Hockey League.

Last week Whitecloud, who grew up in Brandon, signed a three-year entry level deal with the NHL’s Las Vegas Golden Knights.

“For any kid who works toward a goal of eventually playing in the NHL one day, it’s definitely a dream come true to sign my first NHL contract and to be with the Golden Knights,” Whitecloud said on the Oil Capitals website.

“I’m just trying to enjoy the process and take it step-by-step. I just look forward to getting in there and getting as much experience as I can.”

The 21-year-old Whitecloud, a member of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, recently completed his second season at Bemidji (Minn.) State University. The right shot defenceman was considered for a spot on Team Canada for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The Grand Forks Herald reported that a number of teams sought Whitecloud’s services. The Golden Knights’ staff includes assistant general manager Kelly McCrimmon, the former owner, coach, and GM of the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Hard work, dedication

Whitecloud suited up for the Oil Capitals in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for two seasons.

“He’s worked hard to get to where he’s at with his development from when he first got here to now,” Virden head coach Troy Leslie said.

“It reflects the hard work and dedication that he’s put into making himself a better hockey player and a better person.”
