All Parts of District Affected. Working Effectively to Destroy Crop. Virden Poison Station Now Operating at Mayor Thompson’s Veterinary Hospital.
Every indication points to a war to the death with the grasshopper pest, otherwise the grain loss promises to be mighty serious. Hoppers are hatching out rapidly in all parts of the district and already have shown their ability to destroy fields of tender young grain. Some places farmers have first learned that the pest was serious, only after they have seen wide swathes of the green grain cleaned as completely as if the sender had never gone over the ground. Then, on examination, they find that the land is infested with hoppers.
To combat this evil agent of destruction, a poison-mixing station has been started at Mayor Thompson’s Horse Hospital and farmers are getting at the job of extermination. It is possible that other mixing stations will be arranged for as fast as necessity demands.
Certainly no effort should be spared which will help to eliminate this pest or at least minimize as far as possible its destructiveness.
