Eight members of Archie Light Horse and Pony Club attended the 4-H Rally in Boissevain this past Friday. They did so well, all of them came home with many ribbons, and Ricki Hill won the Overall Grand Champion Award for the Cloverbud group.

Sarah Lewis and  Jeanette Lewis (same last names are just coincidental) are the group leaders. Jeanette, the head leader, has been involved since 2003.

She said, “We have 14 very committed members this year.” There is a member from Brandon, and members from Lenore, Virden, Elkhorn and McAuley areas, as well as a Saskatchewan member.

Most of the riding is done in the warmer months, so summer is a busy time for the club.

They practice hard to be ready for the events, such as the Boissevain Rally.

They are a very young club, with a couple of senior members. The leader says, “Two older members lead by example.

Our club is very good at supporting one another. Team Archie has great families.”

In early July, 4-H Fun Fest takes place at Carman Country Fair. This is a Provincial event where everything from barn décor for the livestock clubs, to the crafts of the multipurpose clubs are judged.

There is even a tug-of-war.

For the Archie Club, on July 19 their equine Achievement Day will be held at Elkhorn. Riders from 6-19 years are practicing for the Musical Ride, presented that day. It is a highlight in horsemanship.

Another exciting event will be 4-H Camp at Russell - Cowboys and Camo. This is a four-day campout with 20 hours of scenic trails. There are gymkahan events.

Club members stay in tents, trailers, or cabins. Parents take responsibility for the meals.

“We have a couple members competing in the Moosomin rodeo queen contest.” Some members will ride in the Moosomin rodeo parade and in Virden’s Indoor Rodeo parade as well.
