Kenton By Paulette Wiens

Robin Routledge, (formerly from Kenton) and from Fort St.John, Alberta was married on Saturday, August 22. He is the son of Scott and Marcia Routledge. Gert Routledge (Hamiota, MB) and the late Lyle Routledge and Lloyd and Betty Waterman are his grandparents. Family members also attended the wedding.

Despite a stormy Saturday morning August 22, family, friends, and people in the surrounding area gathered at the McLauchlin farm to celebrate 125 years that the farm has been in operation. Four generations have operated it from 1890-2015. Their son Darryl operates the farm now. Orley and Adele have four children; Lynn, Marilyn, Orley Jr. and Darryl.

Orley thanked everyone for coming and introduced his family, some present and others away. Daughter Lynn asked everyone to sign the quest book and gave the history of the farm from the beginning to the present day. Orley then asked Denis Carter, Reeve of the Wallace-Woodworth Municipality to bring greetings. Denis told Orley and Adele that he was pleased to be there representing the municipality that now goes all the way to Kirkella, SK due to the recent amalgamation. He also told everyone that he is a neighbour to the McLauchlin farm and that at one time he was a hired hand. He presented them with a plaque. Larry Maguire, Federal Conservative Candidate for Brandon-Souris brought greetings also. He was pleased to attend and said that it was a great thing to not only have a farm operating for 100 years, but now 125 years as well. Vicki and Ken Smith from Hamiota brought greetings from the Manitoba Historical Society. A plaque was handed to the couple as well as a sticker for the 100-year plaque. The Province of Manitoba, represented by Amir Farooq, presented the couple with the Heritage Farm Sign for 125 years.

A lot of pictures were taken during the afternoon and the weather cooperated as well. A short time of visitation over coffee and cake followed the celebration.

Orley and Adele moved to Brandon, MB in 2001 to Monterey Estates on 18th Street on the North Hill.

Arrow River by Sheila (Lelond) Kokoruda and Faye (lelond) Campbell

Jed Lelond descendants met at Shoal Lake campground for a family reunion August 13 to 16. Jed Lelond was born at Arrow River, MB, August 18, 1885 - 130 years ago.

Jed and Louse (Durrant) had four children; the late Doug and Wilf Lelond, late Kathleen (Lelond) Geib, and late Evelyn (Lelond) Clark. Doug’s wife, Maud, the only remaining person of that generation, will be 100 years old November 22.

All four families were represented with relatives arriving from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Winnipeg, Thompson, Brandon, Virden, Oak Lake, Shoal Lake, Miniota and Arrow River - a total of 30 - the youngest being a few months old.

Potluck suppers on Friday and Saturday evening were enjoyed with lots of reminiscing, tall tales and laughter.

We enjoyed touring the Northwest Mounted Police Museum in Shoal Lake. It was very informative and educational. We also toured the Prairie Mountain Museum just outside of Shoal Lake. It was good to see the Arrow River Clegg antique transportation vehicles in their new location. We were delighted to see two horsedrawn winter sleighs and a grain wagon, donated by Doug Lelond, Lou Lelond and Kevin Lelond.

It was just amazing to see the well-kept antique vehicles from all avenues of life. The tour of the two-storey house and school sure brought back memories of years gone by.

We strolled through the Shoal Lake campground, pathways, and beautifully manicured Lions North Shore Park with benches, lovely fl owers and water fountains beside the lake - on our way to Morley House to visit Aunt Maud, who really appreciated all the visits, cards, and beautiful fl ower arrangements given to her.

Many family photos were taken and will remain treasured memories of our times together.
