Only 15 per cent of the drilling fleet was active Thursday afternoon across the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin.

There were 90 rigs at work, down from 94 active rigs at the close of last week.

For the same week a year ago, 100 rigs were at work (16 per cent of the fleet was active).

Like last week, Encana Corporation was the top operator across the basin on Thursday afternoon, with 13 active rigs. Seven Generations had 10 rigs at work.

Active rigs on Rig Locator are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving. (Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down).
