A girl from Birdtail Sioux First Nation was hit by a motorist on Monday evening, after dark. The accident occurred south of Kenton, approximately five kilometres west of Sioux Valley.

The police report says the call came on Oct. 25, at 8:40 pm. Officers from the Virden RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle-pedestrian collision. The officers located the 17-year-old female victim on the roadway. She had been struck by a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial investigation has determined the victim was travelling in a vehicle that stopped on Highway 21, where she then exited the vehicle and was struck by a passing vehicle. The driver of the passing vehicle, a 35-year-old woman from the RM of Wallace-Woodworth who was not physically injured, stopped at the scene and then immediately called 911.

The vehicle that the victim was travelling in fled the scene prior to the arrival of police. This vehicle was later located in Virden and seized for further investigation.

Virden RCMP, with support from the Criminal Collision Investigation Team, an RCMP Forensic Collision Reconstructionist, Forensic Identification Services and RCMP Major Crime Services continue to investigate.

This tragedy marks the second young life lost recently on the highway from the Birdtail community. Just over two years ago, on July 31 of 2019, a 17-year-old boy was struck and killed on Hwy #83.
