A weekend to remember at Elkhorn, Manitoba

Homecomers, racegoers and members of the Elkhorn community enjoy a rare double-bill weekend in the Westman community.

ELKHORN Elks Club’s Western Weekend is always a hit with fans and competitors as Chariot and Chuckwagon races run both days, Saturday and Sunday, and barrel racing to boot.

This year there were extra guests to take in the thrill of the races as many attended the Elkhorn Homecoming and visited the Western events. Homecoming organizer Wenda Paton and a team of volunteers welcomed about 750 people to the homecoming. Invitations had gone out along with area-wide advertising to draw former Elkhorn residents home for three days of celebrations.

Aug. 4 – 6 was a weekend packed with interest – a carnival on Friday evening, and the celebration of Elkwood Manor's 30th Anniversary. Elkhorn's history was featured throughout, with a multitude of photos and books displayed at the Legion Hall. Two fascinating historical tours of the Cemetery were hosted during the weekend by Lisa Bartley.

Pancake breakfasts were served Saturday through Monday.

On Saturday morning, author/photographer Steve Van Vlaenderen was hosted by Border Regional Library at the Elkhorn branch. His beautiful book, Vanishing Wheels was highlighted in this car town library.

Homecoming events Saturday began with an opening ceremony program that was both entertaining and celebratory. The people mover was on the go all day. Saturday included a school tour, old-time music at the legion, a strawberry social, kids activities such as a Teddy Bear's Picnik, Memorial Park dedication, a cold plate supper, the evening Kendra Kay concert/dance... and more... such as slo pitch, which carried on all weekend.

Sunday came along with church in the park, a street parade, the show’n shine at the renowned Manitoba Antique Automobile Museum grounds, kids activities such as laser tag, an amazing fireworks display at dusk and of course, good food throughout.

Before guests pulled up stakes, the Elkhorn Ag Society hosted yet one more pancake breakfast on Monday morning.
