The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) has concluded its investigation into an allegation of uttering threats by an on-duty Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) officer against an individual on Nov. 4, 2022.

During the course of the incident, the officer was alleged to have engaged in acts of uttering threats and criminal harassment between the dates of Oct. 1, 2019, and Nov. 4, 2022. Following the completion of the investigation, the civilian director determined that Criminal Code charges should be laid against the officer.

As a result of the investigation, an MFNPS officer was released on an undertaking for Nov. 3 in Virden Provincial Court. He has been charged with one count of uttering threats contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the Criminal Code and two counts of criminal harassment contrary to subsections 264(2)(b) and (d) of the Criminal Code.

The IIU issued a news release on Jan. 31, advising it had launched an investigation into the incident.

As this matter is now before the courts, the IIU will not comment further.
