Black Gold showcases local cattle industry

A fall cattle show, the Black Gold Classic held its second annual event at Virden Agricultural Society grounds on Saturday, Sept. 30.

The committee was pleased with last year’s show and went full-steam ahead with this year’s jackpot. “To say our first year of hosting our jackpot in 2022 was a success would be an understatement. We had around 50 head of livestock and 20 exhibitors that came from across southern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan.”

This 2023 jackpot however, drew even more exhibits with 120 head of cattle in the show. “The show ran very smoothly,” said key organizer, Cody Renz. No small feat considering that bull classes were added and the number of entries more than doubled.

Black Gold Classic was organized for the first time in 2022 when six cattle producers came together with the idea to host a fall heifer calf and bred heifer jackpot in the central location of Virden. It was an opportune time for producers to exhibit their livestock prior to the fall shows such as Manitoba Ag-Ex in Brandon and the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina.
