C-Hawks lead provincial finals

The Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks triumph over Ste. Anne Aces to take a 1-0 lead in the Senior A Provincial finals.

The Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks triumphed over the resilient Ste. Anne Aces to take a 1-0 lead in the Senior A Provincial finals.

The C-Hawks beat the Aces, 5-4, on Saturday. Game two of the best-of-three series is set for Saturday in Niverville. If needed, game three is Sunday in Virden.

The defending provincial champion C-Hawks are hosting games in Virden due to an ice plant issue. In game one, the team had led 3-0 after the first period and 3-2 at the second break.
“I think for large portions of the game we did a very good job at slowing down their speed and offensive attack - not easy with the skill level that they have,” C-Hawks coach Garth Mitchell said.

Taylor Sanheim scored twice for the C-Hawks. The former Calgary Hitmen forward led the Tiger Hills Hockey League playoffs in goals with 17 in 12 games.

“Taylor is a player that has an excellent shot and good offensive instincts that allow him to get in good scoring positions,” Mitchell said.

Also scoring Saturday for the Miniota-Elkhorn were Dustin Fisher, Brad Cole and Brad Bowles. C-Hawks goalie Cory Gardham made 27 saves.

The Aces earned their spot in the provincial finals by winning the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League championship. The C-Hawks got their berth by claiming their second straight THHL championship.

“It’s always fun to win but winning with guys that are local and most of the team, same as last year, are brothers so that’s always special,” Miniota-Elkhorn’s Bryce Kyle said.
