Canadian Natural in the lead as western Canada’s rig count drops by 50

About 50 rigs have moved to down status during the past week, with 211 rigs at work on Thursday compared to 260 at the close of last week. Across Western Canada, Thursday’s activity rate of 34 per cent is off from 42 per cent at the end of last week.

About 50 rigs have moved to down status during the past week, with 211 rigs at work on Thursday compared to 260 at the close of last week.

Across Western Canada, Thursday’s activity rate of 34 per cent is off from 42 per cent at the end of last week. For the same week a year ago, 263 rigs were at work (41 per cent of the fleet was active).

Canadian Natural Resources Limited was the most active operator Thursday afternoon, with 13 rigs at work.

Encana Corporation and Seven Generations Energy Ltd. each had 11 active rigs.

Active rigs on Rig Locator are defined as rigs that are drilling, rigging up or moving.

(Note: This data differs from the rig counts tracked by the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors, which bases its utilization rates on whether rigs are drilling, which it defines as spud to rig release, or down.)
