The Cross of Sacrifice dedication at the Virden Cemetery in 1926 is one of the many photos that will be on display at the Legion’s Photography Exposition and Map Display event.

Numerous older photographs that were discovered this past winter in the basement of Virden’s Legion are being put on display for the public. The photographs are thought to showcase a wide range of our local history.

Kel Smith, Sergeant-at-Arms for the Royal Canadian Legion Br. No. 8 in Virden took on the task of organizing a section of the branch’s basement during the cold winter months. It was while attending to a storage room in need of care that Smith discovered the photographs.

Although the exact number of photographs discovered is not known, Smith says there is a large stock of larger size photos - of which most are still in original frames.

The photos will be put on display in the Virden Legion Hall, Friday, June 22 and will be available most of the day. For those who are unable to attend the premiere event, the exposition will also be available for a few hours on Saturday morning.

Along with the photography display, there will also be the chance to experience two massive floor maps – one of the Canadian Energy Sector, the other showing the WWI battle of Vimy Ridge - all thanks to the Royal Canadian Geographic Society.

Smith says that these unique maps are making their first-ever stop to Virden, and although they are made to be walked on, safety measures must be taken to ensure that the maps are kept safe. Attendees will be required to wear socks while interacting with the maps, no shoes or bare feet will be allowed.

Whether you are a photography or history enthusiast or just enjoy a unique outing, drop by the Virden Legion next week and check out some local history – admission is free.
