Dog rescue a triumph at Opaskwayak Cree Nation

When people from the community called for help, police stepped up to save a dog from a disastrous fate in freezing river water.

When people from the community called for help, police stepped up to save a dog from a disastrous fate in freezing river water.

On April 10, members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) were called to assist in the rescue of a dog that broke through the ice in Opaskwayak Cree Nation.

Members of MFNPS received a report from RCMP telecoms that a dog had fallen through the ice on the Saskatchewan River and was having difficulty getting out of the water.

MFNP members requested other resources, but they were unavailable, so they took action themselves. Police found the dog approximately 100 feet from the shore and could see the big yellow dog was struggling to get out of the water. The officers located a canoe nearby with the assistance of two youths.

Police used the canoe to cross the water and ice and rescue the dog. A thermal heat blanket from the patrol unit was used to help warm the dog once it was back on shore. With the assistance of The Pas fire department, the dog was put into the patrol vehicle and returned to the detachment to dry off, eat, and get a well-deserved rest.

MFNP thanks the two young girls for their assistance in this incident.
