John Harris, owner of John's No Frills, is encouraging the public to come out for Eat Together Day on June 22 and help support the Innisfail and District Food Bank.

INNISFAIL – John’s No Frills is encouraging others to join them in making a difference.

President’s Choice launched Eat Together Day last year, a campaign that aims to encourage Canadians to share a meal and the benefits that go with it.

John’s No Frills in Innisfail is inviting the community to help support the initiative and the Innisfail and District Food Bank with a community barbecue on June 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Too often we find ourselves eating alone, whether it be at work, or because we’re too busy checking our cellphones and social media,” said John Harris, store owner. “We don’t pay enough attention to the people surrounding us and have enough interaction with them.

“Research has shown it’s healthy and good for you to interact, socialize and be part of a group.”

Members of the public can enjoy a smokey and a can of pop for $3. All proceeds raised from the event will go to the Innisfail and District Food Bank.

“We’re encouraging the community of Innisfail to come out and eat together with us here at John’s No Frills,” said Harris. “We’re raising money to help out the Innisfail food bank.

“Last year we started (the campaign) as a store concept. We held a big potluck and ate together at the store. We encouraged all the staff to come in and eat together,” he added.

“We want to take it up a notch this year and try and get the community involved and challenge them to come out and eat with us, socialize and get together,” Harris concluded.
