Elkhorn Fair 6

In 1893 when they had held the first Elkhorn agricultural fair who knew that 122 years later it would still be going. The 122nd event was held recently at the fairground site on the west side of the village. The day featured a full slate of events for all ages and interests.

Things started off with the pancake breakfast prepared by staff and management of Twin Valley Co-op, with special visits from MP Larry Maguire who spent time talking with many of the locals.

A light horse show followed. The day also included a sheep and cattle show, bingo, live musical entertainment, draws, silent auctions and a food booth with a great selection of homemade pies and desserts.

One could visit the display halls of arts and crafts, baking and homemade jams, to see quilts and sewing crafts, photography and art work. Of equal interest were the flower, vegetable and crop displays being judged.

However in my mind, the success of the events can be measured by the smiles on the faces of the children and there was lots for them to do. The staff at Prairie West Recreation had a number of games and events for the children with lots of neat prizes, while the always popular find the toonies in the sand pile gave lots of enjoyment.

I think it was the auto museums barrel train, operated by Don Werseen, that was the most fun for the children and the young at heart.

Later in the day the Elkorn Grad class for the upcoming year held its annual fundraising supper. Afterwards there was more music, greetings from the Elkhorn Ag Society leadership and the popular auction of many of the items that had been on show in the display halls.

Said Sharon Henry, the secretary of the Elkhorn Ag Society, “This year the entries in various areas were both up-and-down, but overall a good turnout. We were happy with the many events offered for the children and with the great live music. Without all the great volunteers we would not have had a successful fair. Many hands make light work for everyone. We were happy with the day and hope to see everyone next year at our 123rd events.”
