Families gather and Miniota area has help for cancer patients

Princess Lodge, Miniota and Evergreen Place share community news

Princess Lodge by Janice Simpson

The family of Ellis and Florence Elliott helped celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a very tasty home cooked supper at Princess Lodge. It was great to have their family all together. This included Darrell and Diane Elliott of Cromer and Kendra Elliott of Weyburn, as well as Carrie, Matt, Dylan, and Arya of Hargrave. Tracy, Travis, Peyton, and Avery Landles of Cromer were there, along with Hal and Marilyn Elliott of Kenton, Michael Elliott of Edmonton, and Marty Elliott of Laurier. Thanks family. It was a lovely evening.

We handed out popcorn twists and bars to fourteen children on Halloween night. There were a lot of ghosts, power rangers and more. We love to see the kids.

Ina Hodgins shared news of a new great niece and nephew. Congratulations to Rachelle and Blair Shaisson on the birth of their daughter Margeaux Jay born on Oct.13, a granddaughter for Myrna and Gord Fox of Dauphin. Myrna and Gord also welcomed a grandson this summer, a little boy Theodore ‘Theo’ Gordon, born to Trevor and Ricki Fox. Congratulations to all!

Sympathy is extended to Tiphany and Curtis Gardham and family on the death of Tiphany’s grandma Lila Rookes, of Elkhorn.

A wonderful pie auction was held in 2012 to support community members from the communities of Arrow River, Beulah, Crandall, Isabella and Miniota who are fighting cancer.  The Miniota and Area Cancer Transportation Committee met to discuss getting the word out that funds are still available. Funds can be made available for transportation costs by contacting a member of the committee.

Miniota residents enjoyed the visits from about 60-80 trick and treaters on Halloween evening. Hope everyone had a fun evening. And as usual it was great to see the Miniota Fire Department patrolling our streets with lights flashing and horns for the entertainment of all.

We mark Remembrance Day this coming week – a time to wear our poppies and to say thank you to all who fought in wars to give us the many freedoms we are blessed with here in Canada.

Although there is no church service once again this year, the Birtle Legion will mark the day with a ceremony at the Birtle Cenotaph at 10:45 AM. The public is invited to attend observing Covid rules.

This week I share the Act of Remembrance words. “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. We will remember them.”

And this thought, “Their dreams became your tomorrows. All they would ask is that you should never forget what they gave.”

Goodbye October! Hello November!

"New month, new chapter, new page and new wishes. May this month give you courage, strength, confidence, patience, self-love, and inner peace. May every day in November fill you with hope, love, sunshine, and energy. Let there be joy, fun and laughter."  Facebook, Oct. 31/21

Halloween has come and gone. I missed having trick or treaters come into Evergreen this year. They would always come with such excitement and anticipation. Seeing parents bringing preschoolers was a pleasure for us. I was at home in my suite Sunday and I saw dozens of children, by themselves or with parents walk by in their fancy costumes, stopping at houses across the street. A niece of mine phoned to see if she could bring her two children to the front of my suite so I could see their costumes. They came to the back door to receive some sweets. Thank you, Krista, that was so thoughtful.

We had two of our residents walking the halls in their homemade clown costumes. Good entertainment, Margaret and Joyce.

Harold and Lynda Spring had an enjoyable afternoon on Oct. 31, watching two of their granddaughters play hockey. They play on a Killarney team, and they won!

Snow was in the forecast and Marlene Balzar drove through sleet and snow coming home from visiting her daughter at Oak Lake Beach on Sunday. I enjoyed seeing the softly falling snow when I was coming home from church on Sunday. I wonder if anyone knows this beautiful German song "Leise Rieselt der Schnee" meaning “The Snow is softly swirling".

It was a pleasure having my niece Joanne and sister-in-law Anne Kruse call in to have chicken dinner with me on Nov. 1. On Saturday, Oct. 30, Laura Reimer picked me up and we had a delicious restaurant breakfast.

Linda West's granddaughter Lily came to visit her grandma on the day of Halloween. Lily knew grandma would have treats for her.

No doubt weather will be changing a lot by the end of November. Let's be prepared and keep safe.

Quote for the Day:  "Some people just make you feel better when you're around them. They're sunshine for your soul and medicine for your mind." - Unknown
