Fire at Uno beyond normal duty

Aug. 8, Prairie View Municipality meeting brief.

A public hearing was convened to hear an application from landowners Chloe and Travis Sheane to vary the minimum front setback for a single-family dwelling from the minimum distance of 25 feet to be varied to 12 feet. Council of the Prairie View Municipality approved the variation order permit, and the applicant is responsible to obtain all permits required from the Mid-West Planning District.

Fire Chief Nick Young attended via Zoom to report on the recent fire in the Uno district. According to Young, the fire was started on August 1, apparently by rail traffic on the CN right of way and involved old rail ties that are scattered along the track and in adjacent property. The ties are very difficult to extinguish due to the creosote preservatives they contain. Because these ties continued to smoulder the department had to attend the fire three times. Some of the hot spots were not accessible, even to off-road equipment and an aircraft had to be called in to apply fire retardant. A bulldozer was used to create a fire guard to keep the fire from spreading. Fortunately, there were no injuries and property damage was minimal. According to Reeve Roger Wilson, RM of Prairie View will be requesting compensation from the railway, as this incident is beyond the scope of normal firefighting duties.
