Firefighters, supporters go fishing at Hoopers Lake

The fish weren't biting, but the fire department accomplished what they set out to do.

The Miniota Fire Department fishing derby at Hooper's was a success with 127 people registered for the Sunday event. The derby, originally scheduled for March 3 was postpone due to the storm that dumped nearly a foot of snow in some parts of Westman.

This past weekend was entirely different. “The weather was gorgeous this time,” says fire chief Nick Young. “We had over 40 door prizes to give out, thanks to all that donated them. The kids loved all the fishing rods we gave out.”

Three large prizes worth over $1000 were raffled and the 50/50 winner took home $1,840.

“Unfortunately, no fish were caught but everyone still enjoyed the day.”

Last summer Hoopers Lake was restocked with pike, but they weren’t biting on March 10. With a good supply of minnows, Young wonders if the big fish were too well fed.

Never the less, it was a beautiful day at the lake. The fire chief says, “The support was awesome and it was much appreciated.”
