Futurity ropes in top competitors

Sixty of the province’s top rope horses and riders showcased their skill during the 11th Annual Manitoba Rope Horse Futurity at the Virden fairgrounds Sept. 23 and 24.

Participants braved the cool fall weather and frequent showers to take part in breakaway and team roping, with each having two divisions – one for four-year-old horses and one for five and six-year-olds. Each horse and rider went through four rounds of competition, with the top performers returning for a “short go” fifth round to determine the overall winner.

Placing first in each division:

4-year-old Breakaway: Macie Rae Warken on “Gunna Mambo” ($1,100 and a horse blanket) Warken also won rounds 1, 3 and 4 for an additional $300.

5 & 6 -year-old Breakaway: Shane Brown on “DHS Peppy’s Cowgirl” ($1,100 and a horse blanket) Brown also won rounds 1 and 4 for an additional $200.

4-year-old Head Horse: Levi Simpson on “Gimme a Naughty Wink” ($2,400 and a horse blanket) Simpson also won round 1 for an additional $250.

5 & 6 yr. old Head Horse: Vaughn Warken on “JT Honey Bee” ($2,400 and a horse blanket) Warken also won rounds 1, 2 and 4 for an additional $750.

4-year-old Heel Horse: Jace Schellenberg on “PK Gallo Smart Whiz” ($2,000 and a horse blanket) Schellenberg also won round 3 for an additional $250.

5 & 6 yr. old Heel Horse: Kiel Wilson on “Reys Mr. Skyline” ($1,900 and a horse blanket) Wilson also won round 4 for an additional $250.

The Manitoba Rope Horse Futurity, which was held in Virden for the third consecutive year. is sponsored by NAERIC (North American Equine Ranching Information Council) of Louisville, Ky, USA. The event also was supported by a number of Virden and area businesses as well as those in the equine industry. The total prize payout over the weekend was $68,350.
