Guys with ties performing on Canada Day

A stage band, the Clubbing Fraggles are playing at Oak Lake Beach on Canada Day.

In 2007, a group of musicians started playing music in their basement. Rob Brotherston, bass/vocals player and Tim Epp on drums/vocals already knew each other. Guitarist/vocalist Gord Lane was introduced to them by a mutual friend. “We got together for a rehearsal and haven’t looked back since,” replies says Epp.

They play anywhere in Canada and internationally, but seeing the band members all have technical careers, most of their shows are performed within a two-hour radius of Brandon. They say they appreciate wonderful support in Westman.

Epp is originally from Boissevain and came to Brandon after a 12-year stint in Winnipeg. Brotherston, originally from Rivers, has experienced life in Canada from Edmonton to Oromocto, N.B. Gord Lane is from N.L.

“We classify ourselves as 80s pop and party rock with mostly pop based music from the 60s, 70s and 80s” says Epp. Tunes that stand the test of time and are known to most age groups. He says that type of material seems to form an immediate bond to their listening audience.

Clubbing Fraggles decided to go with a “uniform” for the simple fact that it identifies the band members and gives them a consistent look on stage. “Some of our fans have started wearing dark rimmed glasses when they come to see us,” says Epp. “When you see ties and glasses you think of Clubbing Fraggles.”

Epp adds they just wanted something simple that they all had at home already so the white shirt and black tie thing came about, kind of a salute to the Beatles.

The band was named in recognition of the 80s television series, Fraggle Rock and the clubbing part was created by the mythical Muppet creatures partying.

The band has been together just over 15 years, a milestone they will celebrate at The 40 in Brandon, Dec. 2, 2023.

“We have an extra special event in the works that may include more instruments, more players, more lights and more of everything,” adds Epp.
