Evergreen Place By Helen Martens

Hello, we're in the Merry Month of May!

I love the month of May for many reasons. With the pandemic, with all its restrictions worse than ever, residents at Evergreen stick mostly to home. The weather has been favorable to go out for country drives, much to my delight.

Quite a number of us have taken advantage of this, each in their own vehicle. As you know by now, the Lions Campground always draws me there with a good book.

All Evergreen mothers got a carnation from the Association. It was a lovely surprise.

What would we do without phones these locked-up days? I was grateful all my children touched me with their love on Mother's Day by phone, one from each of three provinces.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Rose HighEagle at the passing of her dear sister, June. Rose's daughter, Darlene, of Winnipeg, spent these last sad days with her mother.

Also, our sympathy to the family of Agnes Freeman, who passed away recently. Agnes lived here at Evergreen before she moved over to the Sherwood.

Our May birthdays are Ed Milne, Louise Rouse, Douglas Braybrook and Helen Martens. They say birthdays are good for you because statistics show the people who have the most live the longest!

Today, May 14, the day we get the Empire-Advance, is known as National Buttermilk Biscuit Day. Here is a recipe you may want to try:

Old Fashioned Buttermilk Biscuits

Sift together:

4 cups flour

1 Tblsp baking powder

1 Tblsp sugar

Cut in 1/4 cup shortening

Stir into the mixture 2 cups buttermilk

Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut into desired shapes. Bake @ 400 for 12 - 14 min.

Buttermilk Biscuit Dessert:

Cut biscuits into small pieces. Shake them in a plastic baggie with 2 Tblsp cinnamon and 3/4 cup sugar. Transfer pieces into a Bundt pan. Heat 2 cups butter and 3/4 cup Brown sugar. Pour over biscuit pieces. Squish down so all are well soaked. Bake at 350 for 30 min. Happy Eating and Happy May!

Quote for the day:  "A good deed is never lost, he who sows courtesy reaps friendship, and he who plants kindness gathers love."  - Devotional Book for Women

The municipality is under a fire ban once again with very dangerous dry conditions. Our local Miniota fire department has been busy. Be safe everyone.

It is Census year once again. You can complete your form either online or by phoning for the paper copy. Be sure to take the time to fill it out as it is important numbers for our community.

Everyone is enjoying the sunshine, out walking and working in yards. Farmers are busy seeding.   We await warmer temperatures and rain is badly needed.
