Hockey teams gang up on cancer

The hockey community fun while making a difference for those with cancer.

The Virden Oil Capitals in partnership with the MJHL, participated in the CancerCare Manitoba, Ride Inside Wheel with the Wheelers initiative.

Our team thought that we could make a little fun out of it and join with the Virden Junior Oil Capitals U11 Teams. We were certain that this was a perfect fit as Cody Cameron, a cancer survivor, belongs on the U11 Scott Team.

On Thursday, Nov. 4, the U11 Teams participated in a type of relay and rode stationary bikes throughout our game to raise money for CancerCare Manitoba.

The next day, the Virden Oil Capitals rode stationary bikes at the Valleyview Coop food store, all day. It was a great way for our players to get out in the community and raise some money for cancer.

On Sunday, Nov. 7, the two teams joined up for a little fun. We had a skills competition that included six different events. Team Black took the win, but a whole lot of fun was had by everyone.

The Oil Capitals extend special recognition to guest alumni Oil Caps who came to help with the competition: Derek Cross, Brendyn Illchuk, Tanner Lewis and Drake Bodie.

All in all, over $2,100 was raised for CancerCare Manitoba, Ride Inside Wheel with the Wheelers, which was made possible by everyone who donated to such a worthy cause!
