Insurance premiums rise for school division

Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees Tuesday, August 15, 2023

The Board of Trustees reviewed a request from the Manitoba School Boards Association for input into a new three-year strategic plan being developed by the Association. The Board also reviewed information on an upcoming Collective Bargaining and Governance workshop in October.

The Superintendent of Schools report included some resolutions for approval of the hiring of teaching staff as well as approving an out of province overnight trip to Regina for the VCI Girls volleyball team in September.

The Secretary-Treasurer presented motions to approve payment of the MSBA and MUST fund fees for the 2023-2024 school year. Information was presented on the renewal of a couple of PNG leases as well as the status of several Bills that were considered in the spring legislature sessions. A summary from the insurance brokers on policy renewal estimates a 10% increase in MSI premiums for this school year. Fort La Bosse is projecting a break even fiscal year and are preparing for the annual audit. There has been no further formal information from government about the new day care building at Goulter School.

The Supervisor of Operations updated the Board of Trustees on the summer work being completed by both the transportation and maintenance departments.

A motion was passed to approve borrowing of moneys to a limit of six million dollars by the Fort La Bosse School Division for operating purposes for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024.

The board approved limited teacher agreements for Randy Kalynuk, Kim Barkley and Michelle Hamel and an out of province trip for VCI students to attend a Volleyball Tournament in Regina.

The following payments were approved:

  • Manitoba School Boards Association annual membership fee of $30, 835.00.
  • MUST Fund fee of $9,919.46.
  • Fontaine Electric LTD. of $30,818.43 for a new P.A. system for Goulter School.
  • LRB Electric of $5,317.76 for the gas pressure upgrade at Goulter School.
  • LRB Electric of $16,374.40 for the PTAC replacement at Mary Montgomery School
  • Centaur Products Inc. of $8,763.30 for the gym floor recoating for Virden Collegiate.
  • Centaur Products Inc. invoice of $8,763.30 for the gym floor recoating at Virden Jr. High School.
  • Kellington Floors of $7488.08 for new stair treads at VCI.
  • Westman Environmental Services of $23, 329.03 for completing asbestos inventories for FLB Division office, Oak Lake, Kola, Reston, VJH, Mary Montgomery, and Goulter Schools.
