Island Lake RCMP investigate homicide

A woman is the suspect in the death of a little boy.

The death of a one-year-old boy on Wasagamack First Nation has been under investigation by Manitoba's major crimes service and a woman has been arrested. 

It was Saturday, Feb. 17, about 9:15 in the morning when Island Lake RCMP responded to a report of a child death. The little boy of one year was found deceased. On Sunday, Feb. 18. A 26-year-old woman was charged in the boy's death. Jayna Knott, 26, of Wasagamack Anisininew Nation, is facing second-degree murder charges in the homicide of the one-year-old boy.

Jayna Knott remains in custody. Police are not looking for any other suspects and there is no risk to the community. Major crime services and forensic identification services continue to investigate.

Wasagamack and Island Lake

Island Lake is a small community in northeastern Manitoba, where a cluster of islands dot the lake area. Red Sucker Lake, Garden Hill, Wasagamack and St Theresa Point are communities of the area. Garden Hill and Wasagamack communities are roughly 300 km (185 mi) southeast of Thompson, and 610 km (380 mi) northeast of Winnipeg. The community is served by the Island Lake Airport.
