With which organization Virden’s Wyatt Kalynuk starts his professional hockey career will now be his choice.

The Athletic’s Charlie O’Connor reported late last week that the son of Randy and Leanne is now a free agent. The strong skating defenceman had been picked in the seventh round of the 2017 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers. After Kalynuk decided to leave the University of Wisconsin for the pro ranks, the Flyers had 30 days to sign him to a contract. That did not happen, but O’Connor reported the Flyers have been told “they’re still in consideration.”

A 6-foot-1, 189-pound blue liner, Kalynuk had three strong seasons at the NCAA Division I level. He capped his career by captaining the Badgers and earning All-Big Ten First Team, Academic All-Big Ten Team, and the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honours.
