Know when it’s safe to venture onto the ice

Don't rush the season placing your ice fishing huts out too soon or heading out on the lake for a skating party.

Here are the measurements recommended by MPI.

Manitoba Public Insurance and Lifesaving Society Manitoba are reminding pedestrians, motorists, snowmobilers, ice fishers and quad riders to check the ice thickness before venturing out on the frozen waterways. Every early December, dozens of vehicles break through thin ice, putting lives at risk.

On average, 65 people go through the ice and drown in Canada every year. Since 2015, MPI has opened about 100 claims relating to vehicles going through thin ice.

Lifesaving Society Manitoba warns that no ice is ever 100 percent safe, and if going onto the ice be prepared to fall through into cold water.
