Looking for a new source of protein in your morning smoothie? Cricket powder just might do the trick. Announced yesterday, Loblaw’s stores will soon carry President’s Choice® 100% Cricket Powder on its shelves.

You can get your hands and some at the Loblaws City Market in Vancouver. Richmond’s Superstore will soon to carry the powder as well.

Crickets are high in protein, vitamin B12, calcium and fibre, and the powder could be added in baked goods, drinks or daily meals, according to Loblaw’s website. They also said the powder might have a subtle earthy flavour.

Kathlyne Ross, vice president of product development and innovation at Loblaw said they have been always trying to invent creative products.

“By making products like Cricket Powder widely available in our grocery stores, we are giving Canadians the option to not only try something new, but to also make a conscious decision on what they eat and how it impacts the environment,” Ross said in a press release.

While many Canadians might not consider crickets a delicacy, 80 per cent of the world’s population has already included insects into its diet in some way. These particular crickets are farmed in Canada.

“We are striving to take the next step to ensure innovative, inspiring and most importantly conscious food options are available for Canadians and we believe cricket powder is just scratching the surface,” Said Jarrod Goldin, president of Entomo Farms, which partnered with Loblaw to create the product.
