It was a beautiful day for this anniversary celebration in Oak Lake.

On Sunday April 30th over 100 family and friends gathered at the Legion in Oak Lake to celebrate the 70th Wedding Anniversary of Mano and Helen Wiens.

Mom and Dad were married on May 2nd, 1953 in MacGregor, Man. Apparently, the weather that day was miserable: rain, thunder, snow, cold.

They began their married life in Brandon where Audrey and Carie were born. They then moved to Miniota and lived there for seven years. During that time, I came along. In 1963 the family moved to Oak Lake where LeeAnna and Brad joined the family. They are still living in Oak Lake.

The weather was beautiful and the afternoon was spent visiting with family and friends, some who we had not seen in some time. Everyone enjoyed the coffee, tea and cake. It was wonderful to catch up with old acquaintances and reminisce about past times. There was an art table set up for entertaining the kids and it was very well used.

Joining their local children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, from a distance, were Carie Wiens, Holly, Derek and Rian Montgomery from Alberta. Making a wonderful surprise visit was nephew Dennis Bartsch and his wife Juanita from Whitecourt, Alberta. Other family in attendance were Helen’s sister Judy and her husband George Friesen and James and Eliane Friesen; sister-in-law Elsie Rempel, Bev and Kevin Coubrough; sister-in-law Susie Rempel and Sandra Harris. Nieces and nephews attending were Clare and Fern Rand, Marvin and Paulette Wiens, Marilyn and Rob Warkentine, Pat Lelond and Tracy Young, Dennis and Denise Griffith and Kevin, Hilary, Blake and Claire Griffith. Great granddaughter Kara Montgomery and her son Griffin. We were all pleased they were all able to make it.  If I have missed anyone I apologize

After the festivities, many family members remained and we enjoyed supper from Chicken Chef. It was truly a blessing to be able to celebrate such a wonderful milestone in our parents’ lives and our wish is to celebrate many more.
