Manitoba drivers may soon be paying more to insure their vehicles.

On June 15, Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) proposed an application to the provincial Public Utilities Board (PUB) that includes a 2.2 per cent overall rate increase.

In a news release, MPI states the increase would mean an increase of about $27 per year for an average passenger vehicle owner. The increase would apply to 547,166 vehicles, not including off-road vehicles or trailers.

The application also includes a 2.4 per cent rate increase for private passenger and commercial vehicles, a 3.1 per cent increase for motorcycles and a .6 per cent increase for public vehicles.

However, rates in the proposal are slated to decrease dramatically for off-road vehicles, going down by 20 per cent. Insurance rates for trailers will also drop by 4.7 per cent if the increase is approved by PUB in its current state.

If approved, the rates will be changed on March 1 of next year, with all vehicle owners likely to be affected by Feb. 2020.

A public hearing on the increase will be held in Winnipeg on Oct. 15.
