Nursery school to seasoned young people perform in festival

Virden Music & Arts Festival provided vocalists and choirs an opportunity to perform before their peers, parents, and community and to learn from adjudicator Avonlea Armstrong-Green.

The second segment of the 2023 Virden Music & Arts Festival, adjudicated by Avonlea Armstrong-Green of Winnipeg, took place on April 17 and 18 at the Aud Theatre. Even the smallest children found a place on stage to learn how to perform in public. A host of older, seasoned student performers also competed in the vocal/choirs portion of the festival.

Adjudicators bring excellence to festival performers and inspiration to their instructors.

Avonlea Armstrong-Green travelled from Winnipeg to adjudicate the vocalists for the Virden festival. She will have advice for the selection of performers to be considered for the Provincial Festival a little later this spring, and possibly for music camps or other high awards and prizes.

Armstrong-Green's qualifications speak for themselves. She graduated from Brandon University with a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education (A.D.) and was the recipient of the Gold Medal in Music Education. She holds an Associate degree in piano performance from the Royal Conservatory, a Post-Baccalaureate in Education from the University of Manitoba, and recently completed a Masters in Choral Conducting at the U of M under Dr. Elroy Friesen.

She has been teaching music in the St. James-Assiniboia School Division in Winnipeg for 20 years, with experience at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She teaches high school choir, vocal jazz, and musical theatre at Sturgeon Heights Collegiate, and directs the award-winning St. James-Assiniboia Senior Divisional Choir. Armstrong-Green is active as a clinician and guest conductor throughout the province and enjoys building relationships and sharing her love for choral music with students of all ages.

Aside from teaching, she sings and plays piano in her church band. Avonlea Armstrong-Green treasures family time with her husband Joel, and sons Rylan and Crosby.
