Oilers come out hitting in final game

In South West Ball League finals Virden showed strength against Oak River.

On Thursday evening at the Oak River ball diamond Virden Oilers came out swinging ... and hitting. Early in the game Virden scored 4 runs against 2 for the Dodgers and held that lead for half the game.

Leif Wilson on the mound pitched consistently. Curtis Plett was catching.

On this ideal summer evening, spirits were high for both teams with lots of chatter.

However, when a Dodgers batter clobbered the ball in what could have been a sure base hit, but was foul, things heated up and the umpire tossed the player from the game.

The score remained 4-2 for Virden into the 5th inning. From that point on Oak River started hitting and gained 5 runs to a 7-4 score at the bottom of the 5th.

In the 6th inning, Brady Potter relieved Wilson on the mound and after a quick warm-up, threw some blistering pitches. But the Dodgers scored another couple of runs.

As dusk crept in the Virden Oilers conceded the game to a Dodgers win,10 – 4, thus ending the series for Virden.
