Weapons charges applied to a youth carrying bear spray and more in city sports arena.

Bear spray shown here is much stronger than pepper spray and can be shot a further distance. It causes swelling of mucous membranes and shortness of breath. Pepper spray is an illegal weapon in Canada, but bear spray or dog spray is allowed to fend off wild animals and can’t be used on humans. These sprays all use the same substance called oleoresin capsicum, which is derived from chili peppers.

On February 3, 2024, at approximately 8:20 pm, RCMP responded to an assault at Stride Place Arena in Portage la Prairie.
