Ramsey helps Cougars to national tournament finals

Virden’s Emma Ramsey helped the Assiniboine Community College Cougars to a runner-up finish at the American Collegiate Hockey Association Women’s Division II National Championships.

The daughter of Tyson and Tracy Ramsey played a key role for her Brandon-based school squad, which fell 3-0 to Sault College of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. in the ACHA Women’s Division II finals. The tournament was held in St. Louis, Mo.

“Obviously, it was not the outcome that we had hoped for, but I am extremely proud of everything that our team accomplished this season,” Ramsey said. “I feel that we played some of our best hockey at nationals against high level competition. I enjoyed seeing our team really come together to achieve our goal of making it to the championship game.”

A second-year centre, Ramsey scored eight goals and recorded 16 points in 20 games this past season. ACC head coach Tony Bertone praised Ramsey’s high hockey IQ and noted she played on all special teams.

“Emma is always reading and reacting to the play on the ice and that makes a true asset to have on the ice,” he said. “She was truly a pleasure to coach.”

With her help, the Cougars made it all of the way to the national finals. In St. Louis, they beat Northern Michigan University, 10-2; Boston College, 5-2; Central Michigan University, 11-2; and Providence College, 5-2. As well as competing on the ice, Ramsey liked other aspects of her national tournament experience.

“Aside from being at the rink, I enjoyed exploring St. Louis with my teammates and visiting the zoo and the aquarium,” she said. “I also enjoyed being able to share the experience with family members who were able to make the long trip down to support our team.”

Family has been an important part of Ramsey’s hockey career.

“My parents, Tyson and Tracy, and my sister, Avery, were definitely my biggest fans and have been my greatest supporters throughout my hockey career,” she said. “They always encouraged me to be the hardest working player on and off the ice. My dad coached me for many years and taught me so much about the game and how to be the best player that I could be. I am so grateful for the time and effort that my parents put in to allow me to play the sport that I love for so many years.”

Ramsey spent the early years of her life in Brandon. At the age of 15, she moved with her family to Virden, where her father is the head coach of the junior hockey Oil Capitals. Ramsey has enjoyed spending the last couple of years close to home in Brandon.

“I had such a great experience playing college hockey in one of my ‘hometowns,’” she said. “I loved the fact that at every home game I could look up in the stands and see many friends and family members who had come out to support me and my teammates.”

Ramsey will graduate this June from ACC’s social service work program.

“I have really enjoyed my time in the social service worker program,” she said. “I enjoy learning about different ways that I can use this career to help people and make a positive impact in the community. ... My plan is to obtain a job in the social service work field after graduation.”
