April 1, 2024 marks 100 years of service for the Royal Canadian Air Force as a distinct military element. Celebration events will mark this centennial throughout Canada in 2024.

For Manitobans a centennial air show is planned for Portage la Prairie’s Southport Airport, coming up on August long weekend. It’s an opportunity to showcase Air Force personnel and their accomplishments, demonstrate air and space power, enhance the reputation of the RCAF, and proudly honour its distinguished history and heritage.

You will see the CF Snowbirds, 431 Air Demonstration Squadron flying the distinctive CT-114 Tutor.

The CF-18 Demonstration Team will fly the CF-188 Hornet, a high-performance twin-engine fighter that can handle both air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. The CF-188 Hornet is a frontline multi-role fighter used for air defence, air superiority, ground attack, tactical support, training, aerobatic demonstration, and aerospace testing and evaluation. The CF-188 Hornet will show its speed and power at the Manitoba Airshow.

The RCAF celebration promises incredible aerial performances by military and civilian performers.

At Southport Airport, 3 km south of Portage la Prairie, on August 3 – 4, the Airshow Grounds will open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

The celebration includes refreshments and concessions, static displays, family fun and entertainment for all ages. There will be plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some aircraft.

Pistons & Props Car Show means fun activities for kids, a marketplace for souvenirs, and more!

The RCAF 2024 Team are curating a year-long program that includes International, National and Regional events, such as the RCAF Run, RCAF Gala, Legends of the Sky, and allied air demonstration team participation in air shows across Canada.

The Centennial milestone places the RCAF in a unique position to honour its distinct heritage; recognize its tremendous people today; and generate excitement for its bright future.

Canada’s Air Force will be showcased in a past, present and future context, with a focus on highlighting contributions to national safety and security, international peace and global stability.
