RCMP clamp down on cell phone use

During the week of Aug. 27 – Sept. 2, Westman RCMP received a total of 52 calls for service.

Some of these calls include 21 traffic related files, two motor vehicle collisions, two assault files, unlawfully at large and theft under $5,000.

Aug. 27

RCMP were conducting traffic enforcement on the Trans-Canada Highway. Police observed a vehicle travelling 130 km/hr in 110 km/hr zone. A traffic stop found the vehicle insurance was expired. The driver was fined $312 for speeding, $298 for drive unregistered and $672 for drive without third party liability insurance.

RCMP were conducting traffic enforcement on Highway 83. Police observed a vehicle traveling 133 km/hr in 100 km/hr zone. Traffic stop was conducted and the driver fined $482 for speeding.

Aug. 28

RCMP were conducting intersection/stop sign enforcement in Virden when police observed a driver using a cell phone as they approached the stop sign. The driver was fined $672 and issued a 72-hour drivers licence suspension.

Aug. 29

RCMP received a report of a Break and Enter in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. The caller stated someone broke in and stole a pellet gun and a hand drum valued at $1,000. RCMP continue to investigate.

RCMP received a report from First Nations Safety Officers in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. They were dealing with a male that was causing a disturbance. During their interaction, the male indicated he had an outstanding warrant of arrest. RCMP attended, confirmed the male had a warrant and arrested the man. He was released on a November court date.

RCMP received a report of a Fraud that took place at a local shop. The shop was defrauded of $10,000. RCMP continue to investigate.

RCMP received a report of an assault in Virden. RCMP attended and spoke with the victim. The victim refused to provide details to RCMP and police concluded their involvement.

RCMP were conducting patrols of Highway 83 in the RM of Pipestone. A vehicle was observed travelling 130 km/hr in a 100 km/hr zone. The driver was fined $442.

Aug. 30

RCMP received a report from First Nations Safety Officers in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation that they had two unknown, very young children walking on the street who cannot find their parents. Given the late hour they were requesting assistance. RCMP contacted Dakota Tiwahe (family) Services who attended and provided assistance. RCMP concluded their involvement.

RCMP received a report of an Assault in Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. The caller reported a male had threatened her son with a knife but had since left. RCMP attended, the victim refused to provide any information to police.

Sept. 1

RCMP were conducting patrols in Virden when police observed two separate drivers operating cell phones. Both drivers were fined $672 and issued 72-hour drivers licence suspensions.

RCMP were conducting speed enforcement on the Trans-Canada Highway in Virden in the 80 km/hr zone. RCMP observed a vehicle traveling 106 km/hr in the 80 km/hr zone resulting in a $391 fine for speeding.

Sept. 2

RCMP received a report of a missing person. Through a thorough investigation the missing person was located in Brandon.

RCMP conducted patrols of Virden for drivers operating cell phones. An additional five drivers were stopped and charged $672 for operating a cell phone.

RCMP received a report of a vehicle vs. moose on Highway 256. No human injuries were reported. The vehicle was not drivable and was removed from the scene.

RCMP would like to remind people that it is illegal to use any type of hand-held electronic device while driving a motor vehicle. This includes when stopped at stop signs or red lights. Drivers are not allowed to stop in the middle of the road way or obstruct traffic to answer or operate their device. Drivers are required to park in a legal parking lane, parking lot or drive way before they answer the phone or use the device.
