Reston students lay poppies

No Stone Left Alone program began in 2022 when Reston Librarian Kim MacKenzie worked with students to help them honour veterans buried in local cemeteries. The program continued this year.

In total, 19 Gr. 5 and 6 students from Reston School accompanied by school staff Mrs. Elana Wray, Mrs. Lesia Milliken, and Mrs. Kim MacKenzie visited Reston, Pipestone, Tilston and Sinclair Cemetery throughout the day on Nov. 1.

This is the second year for Reston School to participate in the No Stone Left Alone ceremony for veterans buried on Canadian soil, in our local cemeteries.

Mrs. MacKenzie is the Reston school’s librarian. She was instrumental in beginning this program in 2022, to bring students a deeper understanding of how community members and relatives of local people, have served in Canada’s military.

She says, “We took it to the next level, having the students research 34 different veterans this year, interviewing family members who still live locally to as far away as Saskatoon and Toronto. The Gr. 12 class held an Evening of Remembrance on Nov. 9 to share the stories of these veterans.”

Some members of the public also braved the snow-covered cemeteries this year.
