Reston Team wins shinny tournament

Their first official Shinny Tournament in Souris turned out to be a lot of fun.

A shinny tournament took place on the Souris River near the boat docks in Souris this past weekend. It is the first of what the town and committee members hope to become a yearly event.

Three enthusiast players from the R.M. of Pipestone and one player from Souris got a team together to join in on the excitement. The Reston River Rats team consisting of Riley Bodin, Cody Bertholet, and John Patmore of the Reston area and Zack Hodgson of Souris came up with the win in the final round and took home the Shinny trophy.

“Our final game was against a team from Brandon called The Taxi Squad, and we managed to pull through and win the tournament with a final score of 16-11,” says Riley Bodin.

There is no goalie involved in the game of shinny, so it can get a little bit more competitive and requires a lot of energy. Helmets and skates were required and all other equipment was optional to the players. All members of each shinny team were required to be at least 16 years of age to participate. There were four rinks made on the Souris River for the Shinny Tournament and also a separate ice surface for the youngsters to enjoy an afternoon of skating.

Along with the excitement of the tournament, spectators could enjoy the fire pit, food tent, and a barbeque, while 50/50 draws and raffle draws were ongoing during the day.

Approximately 16 teams were signed up to play within the community and some teams from other towns came to show their support as the proceeds for this tournament will go towards funding for the dog park in Souris. The dog park will be located down along the Souris River in the RM of Souris-Glenwood just east of the Museum and southwest of the Swinging Bridge. It will be divided into two sections, one area for large dogs and the other section for small dogs.

Congratulations to the Reston River Rats for their participation and first place win in this first ever Shinny Tournament in the town of Souris.
