Selkirk RCMP investigating use of counterfeit currency

Counterfeit $100 bills have been discovered, the public and businesses should beware.

On Feb. 28, at 1:45 p.m., Selkirk RCMP received a report of a suspect attempting to purchase goods at a business located on Manitoba Avenue using counterfeit Canadian currency.

Officers were advised that a suspect produced two $100 banknotes in an effort to make a purchase when the cashier suspected they were counterfeit and called police. The suspect immediately fled the store.

The preliminary investigation has determined that several businesses in Selkirk were targeted and two suspects were caught on surveillance cameras.

The counterfeit currency was seized and two of the three bills were found with the same serial number. The three bank notes also had a security feature that is found on a different denomination.

RCMP believe other businesses may have been targeted and urge those accepting $100 Canadian bank notes to examine them carefully.
