Serious assault in Waywayseecappo First Nation

A man breached release orders and has left a woman in critical condition.

On Jan. 23, shortly after 5:00 a.m., officers attended to a residence in the community to investigate an assault.

Upon arrival, officers located a female suffering from serious upper body injuries. She was initially transported by ambulance to Russell Hospital but due to her condition had to be taken to Neepawa hospital. She was subsequently airlifted by Stars to the Health Science Center in Winnipeg for treatment. She remains in critical condition.

Officers arrested the suspect at the scene and he was transported to the Waywayseecappo detachment.

Derek Mecas, 52, from Waywayseecappo First Nation has been charged with aggravated assault and failure to comply with a release order.

Mecas was remanded into custody with future appearance date.
