Preliminary preparations are underway for the construction of the new clubhouse at Virden’s Wellview Golf Course. The previous clubhouse was destroyed by fire the afternoon of May 9, 2017.

Just three months after Virden’s Wellview Golf Club unveiled plans to rebuild their clubhouse, destroyed by fire last May, there are signs construction will soon begin.

Wellview Golf Club president Graham Freeman said Tuesday, April 10, that gravel is on site in preparation for pouring the cement pad. Perimeter fence was being installed.

This is preliminary work, but Freeman stated, “It’s time. It’s been a year. Representatives of the golf club are hopeful the construction process will proceed through the spring and summer, hopefully to completion by fall.”

The golf club’s building plans were revealed last Jan.15, at a public meeting. That night, the fundraising campaign was also kicked off with two large donations and an invitation for the community to participate financially to help make the clubhouse a reality.

The Club has committed to move forward with the project this summer, to stay within budget.

“We are feeling, if we wait until we raise what we needed - and it takes another year and a half - we are going to find out it’s going to cost more again.”

A number of donations have come in and Freeman says, “We are still actively fundraising in order to complete the project.”

For those itching to get their clubs out the moment the snow goes, it’s golf as usual at Wellview in 2018, with a similar set-up as last year, in temporary facilities.
