Virden’s Jace Freeman and his new rink persevered to win the Morris Summer Spiel.

It was the opening event of the Manitoba Junior Curling Tour season. Team Freeman was 1-2 in the round robin but had two strong victories on day two to earn the championship.

“I think just trying to play loose and not put too much pressure on ourselves helped us succeed this weekend,” said Freeman, the son of Graham and Roxanne. “This was our first event as a team, so we kind of viewed it as a learning experience. When we were struggling early, we knew not to panic because it’s so early in the year and we were just trying to get our feet under us. Once we started playing Sunday, our game really improved and we gelled as a team quickly which I was very happy with.”

The rink includes lead Luke Robins, second Nick Senff and third Ryan Ostrowsky. All three hail from Winnipeg. Senff is the son of Virden product Danny Senff and the grandson of Maureen and Bob Senff.

Oak River champs

The host Oak River Dodgers won the Western Canada Baseball Association senior men’s championship.

The team included Pipestone’s John Patmore and former Virden resident Zane Sawyer. The Dodgers beat the Border All-Stars, 7-2, in the gold medal game. The Oak River squad was 4-1 on the weekend.

“We had a great bunch of guys who all get along and worked together for one purpose,” coach Derek Shamray said. “We also got great pitching and hit the ball when we needed to.”
