The village of Elkhorn goes all out for Light-Up celebrations

Two hockey games, hay rides, community game night, a parade and much more entertained locals and visitors to the community on Light-Up evening.

Elkhorn District Chamber of Commerce chairperson Samantha Cluett was excited about their line-up of events on Dec. 2 in celebration of Light-up and sure enough, two hockey games, hay rides, a community game night, a parade and much more filled the day and evening in Elkhorn. It was a huge success by all accounts.

After several years’ pause, the horse drawn sleigh rides (turned into hay rides due to lack of snow) were back by popular demand. This free event was  sponsored by the Elkhorn District Chamber of Commerce.

Kids’ crafts at the library was new and of course there was Story Time with Mrs. Claus.

Outdoor fun began mid-day with the Miniota/Elkhorn C-Hawks engaging kids in street hockey.

Lunch was served in the Legion Hall and in the afternoon, the hall was filled with shoppers at the home-based businesses and crafts sale.

Skate with Santa in the Elkhorn arena included skating with the Westman Ice Bandits and then free admission to their game for families who skated during the Bandits' warm-up with Santa. Cluett said of the new team, “It’s a great group of kids and they’re getting them involved in the community because they come from all over to play on this team.” This U17 AAA team is part of a league for players between the Southwest Cougars and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

From 4 – 5:30 p.m. hot chocolate and cookies were served at the big light-up tree where a cozy bonfire blazed. Sponsored by the Elkhorn Community Foundation the light-up preceded the parade of floats through the streets.

Then, Elkhorn Early Learning Centre hosted a Price is Right Game Night where a simple chili and a bun supper was available for purchase.

To cap the day, hockey fans headed to the arena to cheer on  the Miniota-Elkhorn C-Hawks in their game against Rivers where the home team lost this particular game by just a single goal.
