VCI brings Emma! A Pop Musical to Aud stage

VCI students are polishing their parts in Emma! A Pop Musical JV for their annual spring drama presentation.

This is an upbeat modern adaptation of the novel Emma by Jane Austen, first published in 1815. The novel, like the musical, centers around the title character of Emma as she meddles in the affairs of those around her, acting as a pseudo-matchmaker with blinders on to her own emotions.

The story has been reproduced several times, both on the stage and in film. Perhaps the most famous retelling was the 1994 movie, Clueless.

EMMA! A Pop Musical JV follows suit by updating the language, and setting the show in a modern high school. This musical, however, ventures into new territory, mixing classic pop songs with contemporary ones, and bringing the story of Emma to life with a fresh comedic retelling.

The audience will recognize seminal girl group doo-wop hits such as Going to the Chapel by The Supremes and Be My Baby by The Ronettes, classic hits including Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper and I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston, as well as soon-to-be-classics like Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield and Things I’ll Never Say by Canadian icon Avril Lavigne.

This cast of 34 includes many veteran performers. Emma, a character who is smart, fun, and loves to meddle in the love lives of those around her is portrayed by Josie Waldner (Thursday and Saturday) and Kendall Charles (Friday). Cody Thiessen is cast as the serious and studious Jeff Knightley, annoyed by Emma’s matchmaking but smitten with her nonetheless. Watch for a VCI staff cameo in the wedding scene!

The 75-minute production will run from May 2-4, 2024 at the Aud Theatre. The blend of Jane Austen's timeless tale and iconic pop anthems will inspire. It promises to be an unforgettable show.
