Six Golden Bears varsity football players were nominated for league awards and named to the all-star team, along with four other Bears’ players.
The football season ended on Nov. 6 for the VCI Bears in their final match with Moosomin, a semi-final game for the Murray Black Cup.
It was a close game with Moosomin getting out to an early lead and then the Bears slowly clawing their way back.
Coach Mark Wakely notes that the weather was perfect so Moosomin's passing attack was very effective producing a final score of Moosomin 30, Virden 26.
Scoring the Bears four touchdowns were Keagan Shiels with two rushing touchdowns and Lincoln Shiels with two receiving touchdowns.
“This concluded our season,” says Wakely. “Their overall record was 1 win and 6 loses. Improvement was apparent throughout the year as we were a very young team which should help us in the years to come.”
Players nominated for league awards:
Most Outstanding Offensive Player - Keagan Shiles
Most Outstanding Defensive Player - AJ Webb
Offensive Lineman - Colby Whittle
Defensive Lineman - Christian Lansing
Special Teams - Cohen Dryden
Rookie - Keagan Shiels
These six were also named to the all-star team which the coach expects to be played next spring. Extra players named to the all-star team were Gavin Podobni, Chase Forsyth, Michael Love and Cody Kasto.
Due to bad weather last weekend the league championship game was postponed. League winners will be announced once the league final has been played.
