VCI plays, works in November

VCI students serve their community

November was a busy month for Virden Collegiate Institute. We had spirit days, wellness bingo, sports, as well as the grade twelve Santa Brunch. With COVID-19 it is hard to find things interesting and fun to do however VCI’s student council makes it work. Luckily, we are all back in school and there is no more online learning. We were able to do some activities, sports, and fundraising while following the COVID-19 protocol.
For sports this month we were busy with Junior Varsity and Varsity boys and girls volleyball. All the teams had many tournaments throughout November. JV girls managed to make it to provincials however ended up losing to Warren in the quarter-finals. The Varsity girls fought hard in the qualifiers but sadly there was a three-way tie for second which ended up not in their favor and they did not make it to provincials. The boys JV and Varsity combined this year but also did not make it to provincials. However, all the teams played hard and they all had fun playing with each other. As the volleyball season comes to an end Basketball season starts.
Football season was earlier in the school year. The student council opened the canteen and served hot dogs and snacks. Sadly, the Bears didn’t make provincials. Luckily eight Golden Bear football players were selected for All-stars!
The student council had a spirit day and this month we had the theme “anything but a backpack” which meant that you couldn’t bring a backpack to school and you had to bring something else to carry your binders around for the day. There were many unique ideas like a suitcase, stroller, bucket, guitar case, and so many other ideas. There were many kids that did participate and it helped make the school day a little more interesting!
The VCI Grad Class also did some fundraising this month. They volunteered at the Virden Tundra Oil & Gas Place, and served pancakes and sausages from eight to eleven. The students helped cook, set up the backdrop for Santa, cleaned tables, and disinfected them once people left. The grads worked at the front collecting money and greeting people at the door. They also coloured with the kids and gave out candy canes to people once they had gotten their picture taken with Santa. This was a great fundraiser because it brought the community together and gave the grad class a chance to make some money for the grad season.
As you can see, November was a busy month with many things going on. Next month, basketball season will be starting up as well as Christmas celebrations. I, and two other grads from Student Council, will alternate months and write an article explaining what is going on at VCI in that month. For the month of November, we had some fun activities and there are many more to come in the later months!
