Virden Junior High students cleaned up parts of Virden on Tuesday, May 8.

They were on a mission to clean up this corner of the globe as an Earth Day initiative. Wearing gloves and toting garbage bags, students were grouped into two shifts; one in early afternoon and another in late afternoon, with six teams per shift.

With teacher Darrell Corbel, they were heading for designated places and picking up garbage along their way.

Initially the later afternoon team was headed for Victoria Park, but then heard it had already been cleaned up.

"We're just going to pay attention to places you forget [to clean up] and get it done now as we're walking around," said Corbel.

VJH held Earth Day presentations for the students and stressed "cleaning up the garbage and instilling the idea that if we want the earth to be better they have to do their part. In the video it was 'think globally act locally' so this is our way to act locally."
