Virden demolition drivers took the spotlight, standing first, second, and third place in the Brandon Fair’s Demo Derby, Jun. 10. Seven Virden cars ran in the demolition derby, always a crowd pleaser, on Sunday at Manitoba’s Provincial Exhibition.
Jason Carruthers, an 18-year derby veteran, took home first place; and Chris Flannery, participating in demo derbies since 2004, came home with second. Callen Hayward won third in the finals.
Andrew Carruthers, with 11 years of experience, won his heat and then the Feature; Jody Braybrook won first in his heat, with 18 years of experience under his belt; and Tyler Mead, with 15 years of demolition derby experience, won second place in his heat.
Kris Hay put his 14 years of experience to work, participating at the Brandon Fair demolition derby. Even though he came home with no awards, he says, “I had a good day.”
Jason Carruthers, sustained an injury under his chin from his car’s gearshift, requiring numerous stiches. An obvious testament to his determination, Carruthers finished the demolition derby, taking first place.
The group of demolition derby enthusiasts will be heading to Boissevain Fair on Saturday, Jun. 24 to partake in Darbie’s Demo Derby. Deloraine Fair Jul. 14-15 weekend with be the next demo derby on the group’s agenda. For a closer destination, the group will be participating at the Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild Daze, demolition derby on Sunday, Aug. 20.
