Grade 6 students participated in Virden Junior High’s annual Heritage Fair Tuesday, June 2.

More than a dozen people from the community volunteered their time to judge close to 60 projects. There was a wide range of topics chosen by the students as a result of diverse personal interests. Their research consisted of information gleaned from books, websites and interviews. Students displayed their information on backboards. They collected objects, artifacts or models applicable for display. Many came dressed in appropriate costumes or uniforms related to their topics, or had tasty samples to share! Students had prepared oral presentations to explain their topics to the judges. The judges commented that they were impressed with the amount of work that had gone into the projects.

After careful deliberation and much quizzing of the participants, two winners were chosen from each classroom and some honourable mentions: Ms. Woods’ class: 1st: Carlee Pearn - Girl Guides, 2nd: Garett Kreiser - Echo Farms, Honourable Mentions: Hannah Peters - Falling Over Niagara Falls and Olivia Hayward - Residential Schools; Mrs. Pitz’s class: 1st: Kylie Holmstrom - Loyalists, 2nd: Roxie Dryden - Virden Indoor Rodeo & Wild West Daze; Mrs. Burke’s class: 1st: Franchesca Garcia - The Big Move; 2nd: Alex Eckhardt - My Move To Canada; Honourable Mention: Christopher Heaman - Canadian Bacon. All students came away from the experience with a greater knowledge of the history of their chosen topic, a better understanding of research skills, and an appreciation for the importance of skills such as time management and organization.
