Virden Mounties Attend Retired Teachers Lunch

Good-natured officers perform in skit
teachers lunch
Teachers and Mounties reverse roles for a skit. Ed Arndt (r) plays an officer stopping a speeding scooter driven by Cpl. Scott Sadler.

The Retired Teachers of the Southwest Assiniboine Chapter held their spring luncheon meeting on April 16 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall in Virden.

Staff Sergeant Joe Frizzley and Cpl. Scott Sadler attended the meeting as invited guests and actors. Ed Arndt had created a short role-reversal skit where Arndt became a police officer who stops Cpl. Sadler for speeding in Arndt’s new “bubble mobile”.

After some hilarious banter, Cpl. Sadler was let off with a warning because he told the “officer” he was on his way to a retired teachers meeting.

What Are Our Rights?

On a more serious note, Staff Sgt. Frizzley spoke on the topic “What are our Rights”.

It used to be general practice for strangers needing help or seeking information to approach a landowner and ask for assistance. Not so today.

Intruders, hunters, thieves and even some snowmobilers take it for granted that they can trespass onto rural land or homes. Rural people feel they should be able to protect their property and families.

Sgt. Frizzley gave the retired teachers some valuable advice. He said citizens can do a great deal to help themselves and police to do their jobs:

  • Rurals can post their land with No Trespassing signs.
  • If strange vehicles or people are seen in your area, report them to police.
  • Contact police when there’s been a break in or theft.
  • Use devices to deter intruders.
  • Call 911 if someone tries to forcefully enter your home.
  • Lock homes and outbuildings.
  • Try to defuse anger in a crisis situation.
  • Use prudence in making decisions; property can be replaced, life can’t.
  • Remember, if you resort to violence, you are answerable to the law. Your actions and intentions will be subject to judge and jury.

We appreciate the efforts and support of Sgt. Frizzley and Cpl. Sadler. Thank you for being out there on the front lines to serve us.
