An announcement from MLA Greg Nesbit in the summer of 2020 got people’s hopes up for a 2021 completion of the bridge over Gopher Creek on PR 257, a bridge that has been out since 2014. However, construction is not expected to begin until early 2022, and that’s still within the plan. Like all projects, there are details to complete before results show up.

In the announcement last year, the bridge was approved as a 2020/21 Provincial Highway Capital Plan. The story said that the engineering and design of the bridge was under way and construction was expected to begin in the 2021-22 fiscal year.

In a recent interview, Nesbit says, “The project is going to go to tender in October and construction is scheduled to start in late winter, early spring.”

Construction is planned to begin prior to the spring melt when the creek runs and preliminary work is underway.

The MLA says, “I went to bat to get that bridge because there was no plan to get it back when our government took power. That was my election promise when I inherited the Virden area.”
